Sandy Tacas and Debby Skau have been best friends for 30+ years. This is their story, and the story of Down Family Lane.

In late 2005, the best friends both had exciting and fulfilling careers. Sandy was in technology and Debby was in the vault servicing field. Life was busy and full and neither had any idea how drastically their lives were about to change. The events that took place forced them to step back from their careers and re-evaluate their lives and purpose.

Both Sandy’s father and sister were rushed to the Emergency Room days apart with life threatening illnesses. Her father was given last rights and it appeared that she would lose both of them. With care, prayer and the Grace of God, both recovered and returned to their homes and families where they continue to be healthy and active today.

During that same period, Debby’s mother got up in the middle of the night and when returning to bed she tripped, causing her to fall and hit her head on the night stand. She lay on the floor unable to move or summon help. Her dad was not able to get out of bed himself, due to Parkinson’s Disease, and could do nothing to help her. Forty six hours passed before anyone found them. As a result of her fall, Debby’s mother suffered a spinal cord injury, leaving her paralyzed from the neck down. Her father never fully recovered having gone so long without his medication. He passed away on July 4, 2007, and Debby’s mom passed away Feb. 1, 2010. They spent 59 years together.

Realizing how much they had missed due to careers and everyday life, and out of necessity to take care of their family members during these challenging times, Sandy and Debby changed their focus to family. Turning tragedy to triumph DOWN FAMILY LANE was born. It allowed both friends to focus on their families needs, and to share their appreciation for their blessings with others.

It has been a labor of love for them. There is not a day that goes by that Sandy and Debby do not stop, if only for a moment, to recognize just how important family and friends are. Debby returned to her vault and safe servicing company full time shortly after the death of her mother, and Sandy continues to run Down Family Lane. Both friends have a deep appreciation of how short life is, and what really matters in life. One of their favorite artists summed it up perfectly:

“At the end of the day, it’s all about who you love and letting them know.”
